In short: Before he became a global icon as Lando Calrissian, Billy Dee Williams was a scholarship-winning painter who turned to acting just to afford his art supplies. His journey from Harlem's theater scene to Hollywood stardom reveals a complex legacy of artistic devotion and racial barriers.

Born in New York City in 1937, Williams was raised in a deeply cultured household in Harlem. His mother, an opera star, exposed him to the arts from a young age. After finishing at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art in 1955, Williams secured a National Academy of Fine Arts and Design grant to explore "classical principles of painting." Even though he earned a Hallgarten Prize during the mid-1950s, he first performed in plays to pay for his canvases and paints.

His transition to full-time performance was marked by significant hurdles. In the 1960s, he expressed frustration over the "paucity of parts for leading black men," noting that many roles he desired were going to Sidney Poitier. He spent a decade struggling as an extra and in small theater roles before achieving a breakthrough in 1971 with the television film Brian's Song. His portrayal of Gale Sayers earned him an Emmy nomination and a seven-year contract with Motown, eventually leading to his status as a "full-fledged sex symbol" and the "black Clark Gable."

Williams broke major ground in 1980 as the first Black actor to hold a major role in the Star Wars franchise. While he achieved massive commercial success, he remained a dedicated artist; his paintings have been exhibited in galleries worldwide. His career serves as a study in navigating the industry's limitations, from being passed over for roles in the Batman franchise to using his fame to support his original creative passions.
