The cheapest flight to New York launched a global opera career
In short: When a Jamaican dockworker's son was told to study in London, his father chose New York instead because the flight was cheaper. That logistical shortcut led to a scholarship at Juilliard, a masterclass with Maria Callas, and a career that eventually saw him singing for Queen Elizabeth II.
Willard White's musical path commenced in 1946 in Kingston, Jamaica, through radio listening and Nat King Cole covers. He was deeply influenced by the American bass-baritone and civil rights activist Paul Robeson, a connection that would later manifest in his own discography, including a 2002 collection of Robeson's spirituals and ballads. His path to the international stage was unconventional. While an oboist suggested he study in London, his father's decision to book a cheaper flight to New York City proved pivotal. At the Juilliard School, White studied under bass Giorgio Tozzi and was selected by the legendary Maria Callas to participate in her master classes between 1971 and 1972. He made his debut in 1971 as the runaway slave Jim in Hall Overton's Huckleberry Finn. White's career is defined by its immense breadth. He is celebrated for standard repertoire by Mozart, Handel, and Wagner, but also for avant-garde works by Ligeti, Messiaen, and Stravinsky. He featured in the 1976 debut of a fully finished Porgy and Bess recording, which secured a Grammy in 1977. His influence extends beyond the stage; he has performed non-singing roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and even performed the French Resistance song "Chant des Partisans" in 2019 before heads of state including Queen Elizabeth II and Donald Trump.
