How a teenager recording in his family car became an indie rock phenomenon.
In short: Will Toledo began his musical journey in 2010, recording vocals inside his family car to ensure privacy. Using only a laptop microphone and free software, he self-released twelve projects on Bandcamp before evolving into the acclaimed indie rock band Car Seat Headrest, known for ambitious, genre-bending studio albums.
Car Seat Headrest originated as a solo project by Will Toledo, a multi-instrumentalist who began releasing music shortly after high school. Seeking anonymity and privacy, Toledo recorded his early vocals in the backseat of his family car, a choice that provided the band's name. During his first three years, he relied exclusively on a laptop's built-in microphone and free audio applications like Audacity and GarageBand to produce his initial numbered albums, 1 through 4.
The project transitioned from a bedroom experiment to a full band in 2015 after Toledo signed with Matador Records. Following his move to Seattle, he recruited Andrew Katz and Jacob Bloom, later joined by Ethan Ives and Seth Dalby. This shift allowed for traditional studio production, resulting in critically lauded albums like 2016's Teens of Denial. The band has since explored diverse sonic landscapes, with 2020's Making a Door Less Open incorporating elements of EDM, hip hop, and soul, alongside the introduction of Toledo's alternative persona, Trait.
Beyond studio recordings, the band is noted for its iterative approach to its own discography. They have frequently re-recorded and reimagined earlier works, such as the 2018 release of Twin Fantasy (Face to Face) and the 2026 anniversary reimagining of Teens of Denial titled Joe's Story. This commitment to evolution extends to their live performances and digital presence, including a 2025 album rollout that utilized a retro-styled website filled with riddles. Despite challenges, including a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band continues to push boundaries, maintaining a reputation for dense, introspective, and structurally ambitious indie rock.
