Why a car backseat became the birthplace of a modern indie rock icon
In short: Born William Barnes, the musician known as Will Toledo turned a lack of privacy into a creative catalyst. By recording vocals in his family car, he birthed the moniker Car Seat Headrest. From humble Bandcamp beginnings to a full-band evolution, Toledo has redefined the landscape of confessional indie rock.
Raised in Leesburg, Virginia, Toledo’s musical foundation began with piano lessons from his father, though he famously bypassed reading sheet music by simply mimicking his father's performance. His early creative years at Loudoun County High School saw him experimenting with various solo projects and marching band trombone, eventually finding his path through the online platform Bandcamp. Inspired by the success of the band Cults, he began releasing experimental music anonymously, seeking to overcome the audience-building struggles he faced with his earlier work.
The transition from a solo bedroom project to a professional ensemble occurred in 2015 when Toledo signed with Matador Records and recruited drummer Andrew Katz and bassist Jacob Bloom. This shift expanded the project's sound, with Toledo contributing vocals, guitar, piano, and synthesizers. His songwriting is noted for its blend of literary influences and deeply personal, confessional lyrics. Beyond his primary band, he is one half of the duo 1 Trait Danger, where he performs under the moniker Trait alongside Katz’s Stoney.
Toledo’s life outside of music is marked by diverse interests and personal challenges. A graduate of the College of William & Mary with a degree in English and a minor in religious studies, he is openly gay and a member of the furry fandom. In recent years, he has navigated significant health hurdles, including autoimmune complications and a histamine intolerance developed after a 2022 COVID-19 infection. He has since become a vocal advocate for long COVID awareness, using his platform to share his experiences while continuing to engage with fans through livestreams and social media.
