In short: In 1946, Chetan Anand achieved a feat few could: he won the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes Film Festival. From teaching history to discovering superstars, his journey from Lahore to global cinematic recognition is a masterclass in artistic persistence and complex personal devotion.

Chetan Anand’s ascent to international stardom began with his debut film, Neecha Nagar. Released in 1946, it secured the Grand Prix Prize—the precursor to the modern Palme d'Or—making it the first Indian film to gain significant international recognition. The production was notable for several firsts, including the debut of sitar virtuoso Pandit Ravi Shankar and actress Kamini Kaushal.

Anand's career was marked by prolific output and strategic partnerships. In 1949, he co-founded Navketan Films with his brother, Dev Anand, producing hits like Taxi Driver. He later established Himalaya Films alongside collaborators like music director Madan Mohan and lyricist Kaifi Azmi. Through these ventures, he directed iconic works such as Haqeeqat, which earned a National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film in 1965.

His legacy is also defined by a singular, lifelong romantic connection. Despite being legally married to Uma Chatterji until their separation, Anand spent decades with actress Priya Rajvansh. She appeared in every film he directed starting with Haqeeqat, yet never worked for any other director. This devotion extended beyond the screen; following his death in 1997, a complex legal arrangement ensured Rajvansh could reside in his Juhu bungalow for life, protecting the real estate for his sons.

Beyond his 17 feature films, Anand's versatility saw him acting in films like Humsafar (1953) and directing television series such as Param Veer Chakra for Doordarshan in 1988.
