From a family of jewellers to a legacy of 90 soundtracks
In short: Anand Raaj Anand traded a stable family business in Delhi for the uncertainty of Mumbai's music scene. His journey from a struggling playback singer to a prolific composer highlights the grit required to navigate the Hindi film industry, where he eventually shaped the sound of dozens of cinematic hits.
Born in Delhi in 1962 into a family of jewellers, Anand Raaj Anand initially pursued a path of traditional commerce. However, in 1995, he made the pivotal decision to leave that security behind and relocate to Mumbai. His initial ambition was to become a playback singer, a goal that saw him release his first private album, "Babu Tiptop," on Time Music that same year. While the album produced tracks like "Jhanjharia uski chhanak gayi"—which eventually appeared in the film Krishna—his primary breakthrough remained elusive for a significant period.
After struggling for approximately one year, Anand secured his first major break with the 1996 film Masoom. He composed and performed the hit song "Chhota Bachha Jaan Ke," alongside other notable tracks like "Kale Libaas Mein." This success launched a prolific career where he transitioned into a multi-hyphenate role. Over the years, he has served as the music director and composer for more than 90 films, authored lyrics for over 40 soundtracks, and provided playback singing for more than 45 different productions.
His diverse portfolio includes high-profile projects such as Kaante, Welcome, and Shootout at Wadala, earning him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Music Director for Kaante in 2003. Despite this commercial success, his career has been marked by personal challenges. In 2026, after a period of stepping away from the industry and moving to London, he publicly shared his experience with clinical depression. Returning to the industry during 2026, he released 'Ucha Lamba Kad Forever' as part of Welcome to the Jungle.
