In short: Long before his breakout success on Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase was a key player in the National Lampoon ecosystem. From Off-Broadway stages to nationally syndicated radio, he helped define a new era of American humor that bridged the gap between college-campus counterculture and mainstream cinematic stardom.

Born in 1943, Cornelius Crane Chase grew up in an upper-middle-class environment, though he later recounted a childhood marked by severe physical and psychological abuse. His early education at the Stockbridge School and Haverford College revealed a penchant for slapstick and physical comedy, traits that would later define his public persona. Before finding fame, he played in bands with future Steely Dan founders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and studied pre-med at Bard College, eventually graduating with an English degree in 1967.

Chase’s professional trajectory was inextricably linked to the rise of National Lampoon. Founded in 1970 by Harvard graduates Henry Beard, Robert Hoffman, and Doug Kenney, the magazine sought to bring the irreverent spirit of The Harvard Lampoon to a national audience. By the early 1970s, the company expanded into live performance and radio. Chase became a prominent member of the National Lampoon’s Lemmings, an Off-Broadway show that parodied the Woodstock music festival, and performed on the popular National Lampoon Radio Hour alongside future stars like John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Bill Murray.

This foundation in ensemble-based, satirical comedy served as the perfect training ground for Saturday Night Live, where Chase became the show's first breakout star in 1975. His departure from the show early in its second season paved the way for a prolific film career. While he became a household name for his roles in movies like Caddyshack and the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, his early work in the Lampoon’s experimental, counterculture-focused environment remains the crucible that forged his comedic identity.
