In short: Before becoming a staple of Broadway and television, Cheyenne Jackson grew up in a rural Idaho town where his family lived in a home with an outhouse and no running water. His journey from a theater-loving childhood to sold-out Carnegie Hall shows the grit behind the glamour.

Born in Spokane, Washington, and raised in the 'teeny mill town' of Oldtown, Idaho, Cheyenne Jackson's early life was defined by rural simplicity. His father, a Vietnam veteran, named him after the 1950s Western series Cheyenne. Despite the lack of running water in his childhood home, the household was rich in musical influence; his mother taught his siblings to sing and frequently played records by artists like Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan. He was the third of four children in this rural household. His mother also regularly played Elvis Presley music for the family.

Jackson's professional path was forged through persistence. He began in regional theater in Seattle, where he worked as an ad executive while earning his Equity card. After moving to Manhattan in 2001, he climbed the ranks from understudying in productions like Thoroughly Modern Millie (2002) and Aida (2003) to originating his first Broadway leading role in All Shook Up (2005). For his first leading Broadway part, he received the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. He later served as a standby for the character of Radames. His 2007 role in Xanadu earned him Drama Desk and Drama League nominations.

His career is marked by versatility across mediums. He has starred in major films like the Academy Award-nominated United 93 (2006), appeared in the FX horror anthology American Horror Story across four seasons, and even played Hades in Disney's Descendants 3. Beyond acting, Jackson is a recording artist who has released three albums and performed sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, showcasing a career built on a foundation of diverse musical and theatrical training. He also appeared in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra. Jackson even competed in the seventh season of The Masked Singer.
