Beyond the runway, Christie Brinkley built a career spanning art, activism, and business.
In short: While Christie Brinkley is best known for her record-breaking run on Sports Illustrated covers and a decades-long partnership with CoverGirl, her life extends far beyond modeling. From illustrating album art to advocating for environmental causes and managing a diverse portfolio of business ventures, Brinkley has navigated a multifaceted public life.
Born in 1954 in Michigan, Brinkley moved to Paris in 1972 to pursue art studies. Her trajectory shifted in 1973 when she was discovered in a post office, leading to a career that would eventually include over 500 magazine covers. Her modeling success was marked by an unprecedented three consecutive Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue covers from 1979 to 1981, and a 25-year contract with CoverGirl that remains one of the longest in the industry.
Brinkley’s creative output is surprisingly broad. She authored and illustrated a best-selling health and fitness book in 1983 and designed the cover for Billy Joel’s 1993 album, River of Dreams, which Rolling Stone recognized as the year's best. Her professional life has also included acting roles in films like National Lampoon's Vacation, television hosting, and the development of several product lines, including skincare, eyewear, and prosecco. By 2019, her financial holdings were estimated at US$80 million, largely tied to real estate in the Hamptons.
Beyond her commercial success, Brinkley has been a consistent voice in activism. She has campaigned for animal rights with PETA, supported Democratic political candidates, and advocated against the restarting of the High Flux Beam Reactor at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Her philanthropic efforts have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Spirit of Achievement Award from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the USO’s Merit Award for her goodwill missions to regions including Bosnia and Kosovo.
