In short: Christine Hakim never intended to act. Discovered by director Teguh Karya while modeling to help a friend, she initially feared being impolite by refusing his offer. That single film launched a career that redefined Indonesian cinema, leading her from local screens to the Cannes Film Festival and global Hollywood productions.

Born in 1956, Hakim originally aspired to become an architect or psychologist. Her entry into film was accidental; Teguh Karya cast her in his 1973 movie Cinta Pertama after seeing her photos in a magazine. Despite her initial desire to quit after filming, her performance earned her a Citra Award, cementing her path. Karya, a mentor who famously defended her casting against producers who criticized her appearance, helped her develop a deeper perspective on character study through subsequent collaborations.

Hakim’s career evolved from acting to production and activism. In 1988, she starred in Tjoet Nja' Dhien, a role she credits with helping her resolve long-standing questions about her mixed-race identity. The film won Best International Film at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. By 1998, she began producing her own projects, such as Daun di Atas Bantal. Though she faced early production hurdles—including a technical error that forced a complete reshoot—she persisted, eventually serving as a jury member at Cannes in 2002.

Beyond the screen, Hakim has become a prominent advocate for education and autism awareness. Appointed as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador in 2008, she has campaigned for educational reform and disaster relief. Her work remains diverse; she has produced documentaries on Indonesian heritage and autism, and in 2020, she won a Citra Award for her first horror role in Impetigore. Whether appearing in the HBO series The Last of Us or advocating for the rights of autistic students, Hakim remains a central figure in Indonesian cultural life.
