How a bedroom stacked with vinyl records launched a global music career
In short: Craig David rose from a Southampton bedroom to international stardom, selling millions of albums and securing a number-one hit sixteen years after his debut. His journey from local dance clubs to global stages reveals the persistence required to turn early garage-scene potential into a lasting, multi-decade musical legacy.
Born in Southampton in 1981, Craig David grew up immersed in music, accompanying his father, a bassist in a reggae band, to local clubs. By his late teens, he was already working as an MC and DJ. His breakthrough came when his manager introduced his music to Colin Lester, co-owner of Wildstar Records. Lester was struck by the quality of David's songwriting, but it was the sight of the teenager's bedroom, filled floor-to-ceiling with 12-inch vinyl records, that convinced the label boss of his genuine commitment to the craft.
David’s debut album, Born to Do It, released in 2000, became a massive commercial success, selling over 8 million copies worldwide and achieving multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries. The album produced a string of hits, including 'Fill Me In' and '7 Days'. By 2009, MTV viewers voted it the second-greatest album of all time, trailing only Michael Jackson's Thriller. Despite this early peak, David faced the challenges of the industry, including fluctuating chart performance and the need to reinvent his sound across subsequent releases.
His career saw a significant resurgence in 2015 following a viral appearance on BBC Radio 1Xtra, where he performed a remix of his classic track 'Fill Me In'. This momentum led to a new recording contract with Insanity Records and the 2016 release of his sixth studio album, Following My Intuition. The album debuted at number one on the UK charts, marking his first chart-topping record since his debut sixteen years earlier. Throughout his career, David has maintained his connection to the UK garage scene while collaborating with artists ranging from Sting to Big Narstie, proving his adaptability in a rapidly changing industry.
