How a horror-infused sequel redefined the stakes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In short: When Sam Raimi took the helm of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he brought more than just superhero action. By infusing the MCU with horror elements and a high-stakes multiversal conflict, the film transformed a standard sequel into one of the most expensive and visually intense entries in the franchise.
Directed by Sam Raimi, the 2022 film serves as the 28th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the direct sequel to the 2016 Doctor Strange. The production was notably complex, with filming beginning in London in November 2020 before being paused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Once production resumed in March 2021, it concluded in mid-April in Somerset, following additional shoots in Surrey and Los Angeles. With a staggering production budget of $350.6 million, it stands as one of the most expensive films ever produced.
The narrative centers on Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and America Chavez, a teenager played by Xochitl Gomez, who possesses the unique ability to travel between dimensions. Their journey is complicated by the Scarlet Witch, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, who seeks to use the Darkhold to reunite with her children, Billy and Tommy. This quest drives the film's horror-leaning themes, as Wanda uses the Darkhold to 'dreamwalk,' a process where she takes control of her Earth-838 counterpart.
The film also explores the concept of 'incursions'—universe-destroying events triggered by the reckless use of the Darkhold. This threat is highlighted by the Illuminati of Earth-838, a group including Karl Mordo, Peggy Carter, Blackagar Boltagon, Maria Rambau, Reed Richards, and Charles Xavier. The film's complexity is reflected in its casting, with Cumberbatch portraying three different versions of Strange, including a corrupted version and the Earth-838 Sorcerer Supreme. Ultimately, the film grossed $955.8 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2022.
Beyond the central conflict, the film explores themes of identity and consequence. Strange's journey involves learning to trust others rather than making every decision alone, while Chavez must learn to embrace her unique abilities. The film's scale and narrative ambition represent a significant shift in the MCU's storytelling, merging superhero spectacle with the dark, psychological elements characteristic of Raimi's previous work.
