In short: The Marvels, a 2023 superhero sequel, attempted to unite three distinct cosmic heroes through a unique quantum-entanglement mechanic. Despite its ambitious scope and massive production scale, the film struggled to find its footing, ultimately becoming the lowest-grossing entry in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, The Marvels serves as a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) and a continuation of the Disney+ miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022). The narrative centers on Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan, who find their light-based powers linked. Whenever they use their abilities simultaneously, they involuntarily swap physical locations, a premise that drives the film's action sequences and team-building arc. The production was a logistical feat, involving 54 distinct sets built across Pinewood and Longcross Studios in England, alongside location filming in Italy and the United States.

The film’s development was marked by significant creative shifts. DaCosta, the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios film, worked with writers Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells to craft a story that aimed to explore themes of trauma and personal connection. However, the project faced substantial challenges, including a massive overhaul and four weeks of reshoots in 2023 to improve narrative coherence. These adjustments occurred against a backdrop of studio-wide re-evaluations of content output and costs, as well as the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevented the cast from participating in traditional promotional activities until after the November 7 premiere.

Commercially, the film failed to meet expectations. With a gross production budget of $374 million, it earned $206.1 million worldwide, making it one of the few MCU films that did not break even during its theatrical run. Critics offered mixed reviews, praising the performances and action while citing tonal inconsistencies and script issues. Despite its box-office performance, the film introduced significant narrative threads, including the recruitment of younger heroes like Kate Bishop and a mid-credits scene featuring the mutant scientist Hank McCoy, signaling future directions for the franchise.
