The man behind the mask: How Don Messick became the voice of a generation
In short: Before he was the iconic voice of Scooby-Doo, Don Messick was a teenage ventriloquist performing on Maryland radio. Over a prolific career spanning five decades, he became the backbone of Hanna-Barbera, breathing life into hundreds of characters, from Papa Smurf to Astro, while mastering the art of the sidekick.
Born in 1926, Don Messick began his journey in Baltimore, where he trained at the Ramsay Street School of Acting. His early ambition was to be a ventriloquist, a skill that likely informed his later ability to manipulate his vocal cords for a vast array of cartoon creatures. By age 15, he was already hosting his own weekly radio show, performing every character voice and sound effect himself. After serving in the US Army during World War II, he moved to Los Angeles, eventually landing at MGM where he was hired by Tex Avery to voice Droopy.
When William Hanna and Joseph Barbera launched their own studio in 1957, Messick became a cornerstone of their operation. Often paired with Daws Butler, Messick excelled as the supporting foil, providing the voices for characters like Boo-Boo Bear, Ranger Smith, and Bamm-Bamm Rubble. His versatility was unmatched; he could shift from the naturalistic narration of The Huckleberry Hound Show to the bizarre, otherworldly noises required for space aliens and villains. He was rarely the headliner, yet his presence was essential to the studio's identity.
Messick's most enduring legacy began in 1969 when he was cast as the cowardly canine Scooby-Doo. He voiced the character through decades of iterations, films, and commercials, only retiring after suffering a stroke in 1996. His dedication was such that he famously attributed his inability to replicate Scooby's signature rasp in his final years to his decision to quit smoking. Messick passed away in 1997 at age 71, leaving behind a body of work that defined the childhoods of millions and set a standard for voice acting that remains influential today.
