In short: Bill Melendez, the only person Charles M. Schulz trusted to adapt his Peanuts comic strip, defined the sound of Snoopy and Woodstock by reciting gibberish into a tape recorder. His career spanned six decades, moving from Disney classics to his own studio, where he shaped the legacy of the Peanuts gang.

Born in Mexico in 1916, Bill Melendez began his animation career at Disney in 1938 after being inspired by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He contributed to foundational films including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi. Following the 1941 Disney strike, he transitioned to Warner Bros. Cartoons, where he animated for the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series under directors like Bob Clampett and Arthur Davis. His early industry experience also included a stint at United Productions of America, where he worked on Gerald McBoing-Boing.

Melendez's most enduring legacy began in 1959 when he animated Peanuts characters for Ford Motor Company commercials. This work caught the attention of producer Lee Mendelson, leading to a lifelong partnership. Melendez became the sole animator and director trusted by Charles M. Schulz to bring the Peanuts world to television and film. He famously provided the vocal effects for Snoopy and Woodstock by recording nonsensical sounds that were mechanically sped up, a technique born from Schulz's insistence that a beagle should not speak human language.

Beyond his iconic work with the Peanuts gang, Melendez founded his own studio in 1963, which produced a wide variety of content, including commercials for international clients and adaptations of literary works like C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Throughout his career, he earned six Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for an Oscar and five Grammys. Even after his death in 2008 at age 91, his archival recordings continued to serve as the voice of Snoopy in later feature film projects.

His influence extended into education and industry leadership, including a role as a faculty member at the University of Southern California and serving as an advisor for the National Student Film Institute. His studio, now managed by his son Steven C. Melendez, remains active today, continuing a legacy that began in the basement of his Hollywood home.
