The Mexican folk hero who never removed his silver mask, even in private life.
In short: Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, known as El Santo, became a legendary symbol of justice in Mexico through professional wrestling and film. He famously never removed his silver mask, even during international travel, and was buried in it. His career spanned five decades, turning a wrestler into an enduring cultural icon.
Born in 1917, Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta began his wrestling career in the 1930s under various personas before adopting the name El Santo in 1942. His manager, Don Jesús Lomelí, proposed the name to contrast with Guzmán's rudo, or villainous, wrestling style. Despite his initial role as a heel, he became a beloved national symbol of justice, popularized through comic books and at least 53 films. His influence was so profound that he is credited with popularizing professional wrestling in Mexico, much like Rikidōzan did in Japan.
The mask was central to his identity. He went to extreme lengths to protect his anonymity, even taking separate flights from his crew to avoid removing the mask for customs. The only documented instance of him revealing his face occurred in January 1984, on the television program Contrapunto, just over a year after his retirement. He passed away from a heart attack shortly after, on 5 February 1984. His funeral was one of the largest in Mexican history, attended by approximately 10,000 people, and he was buried wearing his signature silver mask.
El Santo's legacy continues through his family and global pop culture. His youngest son, Jorge, followed in his footsteps as El Hijo del Santo, maintaining the tradition of the silver mask. Beyond the ring, El Santo has been referenced in diverse media, from Pixar’s Coco to the Batman '66 comic series and various international films. In 2018, the WWE honored his impact by inducting him into the Legacy wing of their Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a permanent fixture of international sports and entertainment history.
