Emmanuelle Riva: From Seamstress to the Oldest Best Actress Nominee in History
In short: Born in a small French village, Emmanuelle Riva defied her family to pursue acting in Paris at age 26. She left an indelible mark on cinema, from her breakout in the 1959 classic Hiroshima mon amour to her final, heartbreaking performance in Amour, which earned her historic Academy Award recognition.
Born Paulette Germaine Riva in 1927, she spent her early years in Cheniménil and Remiremont, France. Despite her initial career as a seamstress, she nurtured a passion for the stage. Her professional journey truly began after she moved to Paris, where she debuted in a 1954 production of George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man. Her onscreen career followed shortly after in 1957.
Riva achieved international acclaim for her role in Alain Resnais's Hiroshima mon amour, a film that also inspired her to document the city through photography. Her career spanned decades, featuring collaborations with renowned directors such as Gillo Pontecorvo, Jean-Pierre Melville, and Krzysztof Kieślowski. She was also a published poet, releasing several collections of her work throughout her life. Despite her fame, she maintained a private existence, living in the same Paris apartment for over fifty years.
Her late-career performance in Michael Haneke's 2012 film Amour cemented her legacy. Portraying an elderly music teacher suffering from strokes, Riva delivered a performance that won her a BAFTA and a César Award. At 85, her nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress made her the oldest person ever to be nominated in that category. She passed away in 2017, just weeks before her 90th birthday, leaving behind a body of work that remains a testament to her enduring talent and dedication to the craft of acting.
