In short: In 1955, a young Danish dancer stepped onto a New York stage with only three days of rehearsal. His performance in Giselle was so transcendent that critics claimed it was a sacred passing of the torch between generations of ballet legends.

Born Erik Belton Evers in Copenhagen on October 3, 1928, Bruhn was a prodigy of the Royal Danish Ballet. After entering their training school at age nine in 1937, he joined the company in 1947 and reached the rank of soloist in 1949—the highest level possible in the Danish company.

His international breakthrough occurred on May 1, 1955, when he debuted as Albrecht in Giselle alongside Dame Alicia Markova. Despite having only three days to prepare, the performance caused a sensation. Critic John Martin described the event as a historic moment, suggesting the greatest dancer of the era was handing a sacred trust to the greatest Albrecht of tomorrow.

Known as an ideal 'danseur noble,' Bruhn was celebrated for a flawless, clean technique and graceful portrayals in Romantic classics like La Sylphide and Swan Lake. His career was defined by his mobility; he performed as a guest artist with the New York City Ballet, the Royal Ballet, and the Paris Opéra Ballet, among others.

Beyond the stage, Bruhn was a prolific choreographer and director. He served as the director of ballet at the Royal Swedish Opera House from 1967 to 1972. In his later years, he became a central figure in Canadian dance, serving as assistant director of Canada's National Ballet from 1973 to 1981, and eventually as its director until his death in Toronto on April 1, 1986.
