In short: Farida Jalal spent six decades defining the Indian screen, yet she famously rejected the traditional path of a heroine. By embracing character-driven roles—often as the sister or mother—she secured more dramatic weight, critical acclaim, and longevity than many of her contemporaries who were relegated to singing songs.

Born in 1950, Farida Jalal launched her career after winning a 1965 talent hunt sponsored by Filmfare. Her debut in the 1967 film Taqdeer marked the beginning of a prolific journey spanning over 200 films. While many actors of her era sought the spotlight as the primary heroine, Jalal found a different path. She became highly sought after for supporting roles, particularly as the sister to the era's biggest male stars, including Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amitabh Bachchan.

Jalal’s decision to favor these roles was strategic and artistic. She noted that while the official heroine often served a decorative function, her own parts were rich with dramatic substance. This choice paid off: she earned her first Filmfare Award for her role in the 1971 film Paras. Her versatility allowed her to transition seamlessly from the supporting roles of the 1970s to the iconic motherly figures of the 1990s and 2000s, appearing in massive hits like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress award in 1996.

Beyond her filmography, Jalal maintained a significant presence in television, starring in sitcoms like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Dekh Bhai Dekh. Her career was not without its personal challenges, including the loss of her husband, Tabrez Barmavar, in 2003, and the bizarre experience of becoming the subject of a viral death hoax in 2017. Despite these hurdles, her legacy remains defined by her refusal to be typecast by industry norms, proving that a strong character arc often outlasts the fleeting glamour of a lead role.
