George Carlin's seven dirty words routine sat at the center of the 1978 Supreme Court case FCC v. Pacifica Foundation. Fourteen HBO specials, five comedy Grammys, and decades of language-and-religion satire made him a touchstone ranked just behind Richard Pryor.
George Denis Patrick Carlin entered life on 12 May 1937 and died of cardiac failure on 22 June 2008. Born in Manhattan to an Irish-American family, he grew up in Morningside Heights—White Harlem to his friends. A frequent Tonight Show guest host, he opened the first Saturday Night Live in 1975. From the 1977 special George Carlin at USC through It's Bad for Ya, filmed months before his death in 2008, he built an HBO streak; late routines leaned into sociocultural critique of American life, politics, psychology, and religion.
Grammy wins for Best Comedy Album began with FM & AM in 1972, then returned decades later for Jammin' in New York, the audiobook Brain Droppings, Napalm and Silly Putty, and finally It's Bad for Ya. Film and TV side work ranged from Bill & Ted to voice roles as Mr. Conductor and Cars' Fillmore; Fox's The George Carlin Show ran 1994–1995. Posthumously he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008. In 1970 he grew hair and beard, lost clean-cut TV bookings, and shifted material; Class Clown carried the perfected dirty-words bit that police and the FCC later fought over.
Comedy Central in 2004 and Rolling Stone in 2017 both placed him second among great American stand-up comics, behind Pryor and ahead of Lenny Bruce. He credited his mother with sharpening his ear for English even through a fraught home life. Present when Bruce was arrested for obscenity in Chicago on 5 December 1962, Carlin himself was jailed the same night for refusing government ID. The packet ties legal history to craft: a bit about forbidden words became constitutional precedent without leaving the stand-up frame.
