In short: Known globally for his Fantasy Island role and iconic shout, Hervé Villechaize was a classically trained painter who arrived in America with nothing. His journey from a struggling artist living in his car to a Hollywood star was marked by immense talent, professional volatility, and profound, hidden physical suffering.

Born in 1943 in Nazi-occupied Paris, Villechaize was the son of a surgeon who unsuccessfully sought medical cures for his son's dwarfism. Despite being bullied, he found refuge in art, eventually becoming the youngest artist to exhibit at the Museum of Paris by age 18. In 1964, he moved to New York, where he taught himself English through television while working as a painter and photographer.

His acting career began in off-Broadway productions before he transitioned to film. By 1974, he was destitute and living in his vehicle in Los Angeles, even working as a rat catcher's assistant to survive. His breakthrough came when he was cast as a villainous henchman in the James Bond feature The Man with the Golden Gun. Co-star Christopher Lee later described this period as potentially the happiest time of his life, a brief respite between a difficult past and an uncertain future.

Villechaize achieved massive fame as the assistant on Fantasy Island, but his tenure was marred by conflict with producers and his demands for equal pay. Beyond his screen work, he was a multifaceted performer who appeared as a puppeteer on Sesame Street and even released a musical single. However, his later years were defined by chronic pain caused by oversized internal organs that made breathing difficult, forcing him to sleep in a kneeling position.

In 1993, at age 50, Villechaize died by suicide. He left behind a note citing his health struggles and an audio recording of his final moments. His life was later dramatized in the 2018 HBO film My Dinner with Hervé, based on an interview conducted by Sacha Gervasi shortly before the actor's death.
