From MBA student to television icon, the versatile career of Hina Khan
In short: Hina Khan rose from a chance audition to become one of India's highest-paid television actresses. Known for her remarkable range, she transitioned from a beloved soap opera lead to a critically acclaimed antagonist, all while navigating the intense pressures of reality television and a public battle with stage-three cancer.
Born in Srinagar in 1987, Hina Khan initially pursued a traditional academic path, completing her Master of Business Administration in 2009. Her entry into entertainment was serendipitous; while studying in Delhi, friends encouraged her to audition for the long-running soap opera Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. She secured the role of Akshara Maheshwari Singhania, a character she portrayed for eight years. This performance established her as a household name and earned her multiple accolades, including two ITA Awards for Best Actress.
Khan’s career is defined by a deliberate rejection of typecasting. After leaving her debut show in 2016, she pivoted toward reality television, finishing as a runner-up on both Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss 11. She later surprised audiences by embracing a negative role in Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, a move that garnered her a Gold Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role. Her versatility extends to film, digital series, and music videos, demonstrating a consistent ability to adapt across diverse media formats.
Beyond her professional achievements, Khan has been a prominent figure in Indian pop culture, frequently appearing on lists of the most desirable and influential television personalities. However, her life has also been marked by significant personal challenges. She has publicly discussed her struggle with asthma and, in June 2024, revealed a diagnosis of stage-three breast cancer. Despite these obstacles, she has continued to work, including a 2024 Pollywood debut in Shinda Shinda No Papa. Her journey reflects a blend of strategic career management and resilience in the face of profound personal adversity.
