The architectural battle to perfect the Hollywood Bowl's acoustics
In short: From a simple wooden platform to a high-tech sonic marvel, the Hollywood Bowl has spent a century fighting its own environment. Discover how legendary architects and modern engineers struggled to transform a natural canyon into one of America's premier musical stages.
The Hollywood Bowl's journey began in 1919 when William Reed and H. Ellis Reed selected a shaded canyon known as Daisy Dell for its natural acoustics. The venue officially opened on July 11, 1922, originally consisting of little more than wooden platforms and canvas. In its infancy, the Bowl functioned as a community space where tickets cost just 25 cents, a price maintained under the slogan "popular prices will prevail."
The venue's architectural history is defined by a struggle for acoustic perfection. In 1926, the Allied Architects Association designed a shell that was deemed unacceptable both visually and acoustically. This led to a series of experimental designs by Lloyd Wright. His 1927 pyramidal shell, inspired by Indigenous architecture, offered superior acoustics but was dismissed as too avant-garde. His 1928 concentric ring design was later ruined by water damage.
The iconic transite shell, built by the Allied Architects in 1929, stood until 2003. While its clean white arches became a standard for music shells, its acoustics deteriorated over time. By the late 1970s, the venue faced an acoustic liability due to the hardening of the transite skin. To mitigate this, Frank Gehry designed fiberglass spheres to dampen sound, though the venue still required massive electronic amplification to overcome rising background noise.
A new shell debuted in the 2004 season, designed by Hodgetts + Fung. This modern structure incorporates design elements from the 1926, 1928, and 1929 shells, as well as the ring-shaped structure of the 1927 Lloyd Wright design. Today, the venue utilizes a sophisticated L-Acoustics line-array system that uses time delay to ensure sound from the speakers reaches listeners simultaneously with the natural sound from the stage.
