A soap opera born from a local dispute over a foster home in Australia
In short: Created by Alan Bateman after observing community outrage in Kangaroo Point, Home and Away transformed a local conflict into a global television phenomenon. Initially titled Refuge, the show became a cultural staple, capturing the lives of Summer Bay residents and evolving into one of Australia’s most successful international media exports.
The origins of Home and Away trace back to a 1987 trip to Kangaroo Point, New South Wales. Alan Bateman, the Seven Network’s head of drama, witnessed locals protesting the construction of a foster home for city children. This friction between the established community and the incoming youth inspired Bateman to develop a narrative about how streetwise city kids might adapt to a new, coastal lifestyle. While executives were initially skeptical, positive audience research led to the show's 1988 premiere.
The series is set in the fictional seaside town of Summer Bay, with exterior scenes filmed at Palm Beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches district. Since its inception, the show has maintained a youth-focused narrative, centering on the Fletcher family and their foster children. Over the decades, the production has navigated significant challenges, including the destruction of the Summer Bay House and Caravan Park sets by a 2002 bushfire, and a nine-week production suspension during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond its domestic success, Home and Away has achieved remarkable international reach, airing in over 140 countries. Its popularity in the United Kingdom was particularly notable; after a competitive £40 million auction in 2000, the show moved from ITV to Channel 5. Despite evolving production techniques—such as the 2010 shift from Epping studios to the Australian Technology Park—the series remains a cornerstone of Australian television, holding the record for the most Logie Award wins.
