A shared house born from a wedding's singles table
In short: What happens when five strangers, bonded by a shared sense of isolation at a wedding, decide to solve their life's problems with a single real estate transaction? This Australian comedy-drama explores the chaotic, comedic, and human results of five people attempting to share a five-bedroom home.
The premise of Five Bedrooms centers on five individuals at different life stages who find themselves seated together at a wedding's singles table. After several drinks, the group reaches a collective, perhaps impulsive, conclusion: the solution to their respective personal and professional struggles is to purchase a five-bedroom house together. This narrative explores the friction and camaraderie that arises when disparate lives are forced into a single domestic space.
The production of the series has been marked by significant logistical shifts and international expansion. Originally premiering on Network 10 in Australia on May 15, 2019, the show faced production hurdles during the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, while the second season was set to premiere in 2020, it was pushed to 2021. Production for the second season was even halted in March 2020, only resuming in mid-2020. The series eventually transitioned from Network 10 to the streaming platform Paramount+ in May 2021.
The show's reach extends well beyond Australia, establishing it as a global export. It became the fifth Australian drama to air on BBC One after the rights to Neighbours moved to Channel 5 in 2008. It has since been broadcast in the United States on Peacock, as well as in Portugal, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and is scheduled for France and Germany in 2026. The series continues to grow, with the fourth season beginning filming in Melbourne in September 2022.
