In short: Honoré Daumier was a prolific 19th-century artist who spent his life lampooning the French elite. His biting political satire was so effective that King Louis-Philippe once imprisoned him, even forcing him into a mental asylum to suggest that only a madman would dare to oppose the crown.

Born in Marseille in 1808, Honoré Daumier was the son of a failed poet whose own mental breakdown forced the young artist into the workforce at age 13. Working as a messenger for a bailiff and later at a bookstore in the Palais-Royal, Daumier gained an intimate view of the human comedy. He observed the lawyers, swindlers, and social climbers who would later populate his thousands of lithographs and drawings.

Daumier’s career was defined by his relentless output and his political courage. In 1832, he published a scathing caricature of King Louis-Philippe, leading to a six-month prison sentence. The authorities kept him in a mental hospital for four of those months, a calculated move to frame his dissent as insanity. Despite this, he remained a fierce critic of the regime, later turning his gaze toward the bourgeoisie and the legal system with a sculptural, expressive style that Balzac famously compared to Michelangelo.

While he is remembered today as a master of caricature, Daumier considered himself a painter first. His paintings, which often explored themes of daily life and human struggle, were largely ignored during his lifetime. However, his work eventually helped bridge the gap between traditional art and the Impressionist movement. By the time of his death in 1879, his influence on later generations of artists was undeniable, even if he spent much of his own life in financial hardship and relative obscurity.
