In short: Beyond its role as a beast of burden, the horse serves as a profound map of the human psyche. From prehistoric cave art to modern psychoanalysis, it represents the ultimate vehicle: a bridge between animal instinct and human reason, capable of carrying us across physical borders and metaphysical realms.

The horse's symbolic weight is unparalleled, second only to the serpent in its complexity. It has been a primary subject in prehistoric art since the 35th millennium BC, appearing well before humans actually domesticated the species. This suggests that the horse was chosen as a symbol of power, a totemic ancestor, or a shamanic guide by prehistoric man, though the exact reason remains a subject of scholarly debate. In mythology and psychoanalysis, the horse functions as a 'vehicle' for the soul. Carl Gustav Jung viewed it as an archetype of the mother—carrying her child—while Sigmund Freud interpreted it as a symbol of the unconscious psyche or the 'beast in man.' This duality is perfectly encapsulated in the 'centaur myth,' which represents the perfect coupling of brute force and intelligence.

For the rider, the goal is a state of harmony where the mental (human) successfully directs the instinctual (animal). If this balance fails, the horse's race leads to madness; if it succeeds, the race is triumphant. The horse also serves as a psychopomp, an animal capable of crossing boundaries between worlds. In shamanic traditions, it is a protector and a guide to the Other World, sometimes said to see thirty days into the future. It connects the three levels of the cosmos: the earthly plane of movement, the subterranean plane of the chthonic, and the celestial plane of the Uranian. Even today, despite the rise of motorized transport, the horse remains a 'universal courier' in our collective subconscious, symbolizing self-mastery and the transgression of psychic limits.

Note: Different perspectives exist, including the 'shamanic animal' concept proposed by Marc-André Wagner and Jean Clottes, alongside the 'symbol of power' idea featured in the display *Le cheval, symbole de pouvoirs dans l'Europe préhistorique*.
