Why a master painter spent 20 years hiding a face
In short: Antonio Ciseri dedicated the final two decades of his life to a single commission. This video explores the radical perspective shifts and deliberate choices that defined his masterpiece, moving beyond mere duration into profound artistic intent.
Commissioned in 1871 by the Italian government, Antonio Ciseri worked on 'Ecce Homo' until his death in 1891. While many masters depicted the moment Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd, Ciseri broke tradition by choosing to hide Christ's face entirely.
The painting focuses the viewer's attention on a different perspective: the only clearly visible face belongs to the person on the balcony who attempted to intervene in the condemnation. The video examines how these specific visual decisions create a unique narrative of the scene.
