The 18th-century masterpiece that people believed was forged by alchemy
In short: In 1753, a sculpture appeared so delicate that observers claimed it was fabric turned to stone. This video explores the technical mystery of the Veiled Christ and the occult history surrounding its creation.
The Veiled Christ is a marble shroud carved with such precision that for over a century, rumors circulated across Europe that it was created through alchemy. The commission was driven by an occult prince who populated his chapel with Masonic symbols and kept biological specimens in the basement below.
Despite its fame, the sculptor remains largely unknown. Even Antonio Canova, one of history's greatest masters, admitted he would have traded ten years of his life to achieve such a feat. To this day, no one has fully explained how a single block of marble was manipulated to mimic cloth so perfectly.
