From Orthodox priest to controversial provocateur, the multifaceted life of Ivan Okhlobystin
In short: Ivan Okhlobystin is a Russian actor, director, and screenwriter whose life has defied conventional categorization. Once a practicing Orthodox priest, he was eventually banned from the priesthood due to his cinematic roles. Today, he remains a polarizing figure, known as much for his outspoken political views as his creative work.
Born in 1966 to a military doctor and an engineer, Ivan Okhlobystin emerged from the Soviet era as a significant creative force. After graduating from the directing department of VGIK in 1992, he quickly made his mark in Russian cinema, both behind and in front of the camera. His early career included directing the award-winning film Arbiter and writing the script for the cult classic Demobbed, which drew inspiration from his own service in the Soviet rocket forces.
Okhlobystin’s trajectory took a dramatic turn in the late 1990s when he underwent a religious conversion and became an Orthodox priest. This spiritual chapter ended in February 2010, when Patriarch Kirill removed him from the priesthood, citing his return to acting roles deemed incompatible with his clerical status. Following this, he resumed his entertainment career, taking on roles in various films and voice acting projects, while also serving as the creative director for the retailer Euroset.
Beyond his artistic output, Okhlobystin has become a figure of intense controversy. He has expressed extreme nationalist views, including a 2012 declaration of his intent to rebuild the Russian Empire and a 2013 statement advocating for the burning of homosexuals. His political stances have led to significant international consequences, including being banned from entering Ukraine, Latvia, and Estonia, and facing sanctions from the European Union as of June 2024. His life remains a complex intersection of artistic ambition, religious identity, and radical political rhetoric.
