From Diplomatic Aspirations to Brazilian Television Icon: The Multifaceted Life of Jô Soares
In short: Born in Rio de Janeiro, Jô Soares evolved from a student of diplomacy into a titan of Brazilian entertainment. As a comedian, talk show host, and novelist, he defined late-night television for decades. His career spanned from the early days of TV Rio to his celebrated tenure at Rede Globo.
José Eugênio Soares, universally known as Jô Soares, was a polymath whose influence permeated Brazilian culture. Although his early life was shaped by an ambition to enter the diplomatic service—a path encouraged by his great-grandfather—Soares ultimately pivoted toward the arts. He began his professional journey in 1958, taking acting classes and securing his first television roles at TV Rio, where he both wrote and performed in comedy programs.
Soares' television career reached its zenith through his mastery of the talk show format. After joining Rede Globo in 1970, he transitioned to SBT in 1988 to launch 'Jô Soares Onze e Meia'. This program, which drew inspiration from the style of David Letterman, became a cultural staple. In 2000, he returned to Rede Globo with 'Programa do Jô', a show that remained on the air until 2016. Beyond his broadcast work, Soares was a prolific creative force, producing plays such as Richard III and releasing various jazz recordings.
His intellectual reach extended into literature, where he found international success. His 1995 debut novel, 'O Xangô de Baker Street' (A Samba for Sherlock), was translated into multiple languages and adapted for cinema in 2001. He continued to publish works like 'O Homem Que Matou Getúlio Vargas' in 1998 and 'Assassinatos na Academia Brasileira de Letras' in 2005. A devout Roman Catholic with a specific reverence for Rita of Cascia, Soares remained a prominent public figure until his passing in 2022, leaving behind a legacy recently captured in the 2024 documentary 'Um Beijo do Gordo'.
