How a Brooklyn pool hustler became the legendary entertainer known as The Great One.
In short: Jackie Gleason rose from a hardscrabble Brooklyn childhood to become a television titan and master of character comedy. Known as The Great One, he commanded high ratings for decades, pioneered iconic sketches, and maintained a secret, successful secondary career as a bestselling mood music composer throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Born in 1916, Herbert Walton Gleason Jr. grew up in a Brooklyn apartment that would later serve as the inspiration for the home of his most famous character, Ralph Kramden. After his father abandoned the family in 1925, Gleason navigated a difficult youth, working odd jobs as a pool hall attendant, carnival barker, and stunt driver. His early performing career was defined by grit; he once performed as a master of ceremonies for just four dollars a night. By the 1940s, he was honing his craft in Manhattan nightclubs, where he developed an uncanny ability to win over audiences even while insulting them.
Gleason's television breakthrough arrived in 1950 when he joined the DuMont Television Network, eventually moving to CBS in 1952. His variety show became a cultural juggernaut, famous for its splashy dance numbers and a rotating cast of original characters. From the millionaire Reginald Van Gleason III to the silent, melancholic Poor Soul, these figures were often rooted in his own life experiences. He famously disliked rehearsals, relying instead on a photographic memory to master scripts in a single reading before filming.
Beyond his comedic legacy, Gleason was a prolific musician, producing nearly 60 long-playing albums. His debut, Music for Lovers Only, set a record by remaining on the Billboard Top Ten charts for 153 weeks. Despite his fame, he remained a complex figure, often remembered for his all-night parties and his 4-F military classification during World War II, which was granted due to a combination of physical injuries and being 100 pounds overweight. He spent his later years in Miami Beach, leaving behind a career that spanned film, television, and music, earning him multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
