The filmmaker who turned Shakespeare into a National Award winner
In short: Jayaraj is a master of the Malayalam film industry who bridges the gap between commercial success and high art. From adapting Shakespeare to creating miniature rain forests, his career is defined by a commitment to aesthetic value and environmental conservation.
Jayaraj's cinematic language was forged in the crucible of world classics. While living in Thiruvananthapuram, he was deeply influenced by masterpieces like Kurosawa's Rashomon and De Sica's Bicycle Thieves. This foundation allowed him to transition from a commercially oriented debut in 1990 to a career marked by critical prestige. He notably adapted Shakespeare's Othello into the film Kaliyattam in 1997, which earned him the National Film Award for Best Direction. He began his professional journey as an assistant to director Bharathan, working on six different projects. This period included the critically acclaimed Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam. His early directorial efforts also included titles like High Way and Arabia.
His versatility is evidenced by his ability to dominate both the box office and the awards circuit. He has secured a ten-time National Film Award and multiple Kerala State Film Awards. A landmark moment occurred in 2015 with Ottaal, which became the first Malayalam movie in 20 years to sweep all top awards at the International Film Festival of Kerala. His work often explores the intersection of human experience and nature, a theme that extends into his personal advocacy. His diverse filmography includes the Hindi production Bheebhatsa as part of a larger nine-film series. He also received the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Additionally, he won the Golden Peacock at the IFFI.
Beyond the screen, Jayaraj is a dedicated conservationist. In 2010, he founded the Jayaraj Foundation to promote people's welfare and nature conservation. This includes the Birds Club International, which works with the Government of Kerala to create miniature rain forests in schools and colleges. His work exemplifies a holistic approach to art: using the medium of film to reflect on the world, and using his platform to actively preserve it. The foundation also manages the SMART program, which uses yoga and meditation to help children defend their dreams. His project Roudram 2018 was inspired by the devastating floods in central Travancore. This film highlights the extreme power of nature over human life.
