In short: Before he was a powerhouse of Tamil film music, Harris Jayaraj was a self-taught synthesist working behind the scenes. He spent years as a programmer for over 25 different music directors before finally debuting with a score that broke a nine-year record held by one of India's biggest icons.

Born in Chennai in 1975, Harris Jayaraj's musical foundation was built on classical training and family legacy. The man's parent, S. M. Jayakumar, worked as a famous cinema guitarist who partnered with iconic artists such as K. J. Yesudas and S. P. Balasubramaniam. However, following distressing bomb blasts, Jayakumar became more religious, leading young Harris to take over family responsibilities while pursuing his own musical path. He began formal training in carnatic music at age six and later mastered classical guitar under A. Abdul Sattar.

Jayaraj's ascent was marked by academic distinction and grueling labor. After scoring the highest mark in Asia on a 4th-grade exam from Trinity College, London, he balanced recording sessions with schooling until high school. His early career was humble; his first paid gig as an assistant guitarist for a Malayalam film earned him just ₹200. By the year 2000, he had transitioned into a prolific programmer, contributing to over 600 projects across ten different languages and working under luminaries like A. R. Rahman.

His breakthrough came with Gautham Vasudev Menon's 'Minnale,' where his work broke A. R. Rahman’s nine-year continuous record for Best Music Director – Tamil. Since then, he has become a staple of the industry, scoring massive hits like 'Ghajini'—where the track 'Sutum Vizhi' crossed 20 million downloads—and 'Kaakha Kaakha.' His signature style often incorporates unique elements like gibberish words and specific atmospheric synergies, eventually leading him to launch his own studio, Studio H, in 2017.

Beyond film scores, Jayaraj has expanded into global tours and social impact. In 2011, he launched 'Harris on the Edge,' a world tour featuring a large troupe of playback singers. He also utilized his platform for advocacy, composing music for commercials highlighting child poverty and labor in Tamil Nadu.
