How the FBI systematically destroyed the life and career of icon Jean Seberg
In short: Jean Seberg was a French New Wave icon, but her life was shattered by a targeted FBI campaign. Through the COINTELPRO program, the agency used surveillance, defamation, and false rumors to neutralize her influence, ultimately contributing to her tragic death at age 40 in Paris in 1979.
Jean Seberg, born in Marshalltown, Iowa, rose to international fame as the star of Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 film Breathless. Despite her early struggles with critical reception in Hollywood, she became a central figure in the French New Wave. However, her support for the Black Panther Party in the late 1960s drew the attention of the FBI. Under the direct orders of J. Edgar Hoover, the agency launched a COINTELPRO operation designed to discredit her and cheapen her public image.
The FBI's most damaging tactic involved planting a false story in 1970, alleging that Seberg's pregnancy was the result of an affair with a Black Panther member. The rumor, published by gossip columnist Joyce Haber and Newsweek, caused Seberg such severe distress that she went into premature labor. Her daughter died two days later. Seberg held an open-casket funeral to prove the infant's white skin, yet the trauma haunted her for the rest of her life. She reportedly attempted suicide on every anniversary of the child's death.
Beyond the smear campaign, Seberg faced years of aggressive surveillance, including wiretapping and intimidation, which extended to her life in France. Experts believe she was effectively blacklisted from Hollywood, as she stopped receiving quality roles. While the FBI admitted to its actions two weeks after her 1979 death, researchers note that the agency viewed the operation as a success. Seberg's second husband, Romain Gary, publicly blamed the FBI for her demise, citing the relentless psychological warfare that had systematically dismantled her career and personal well-being.
