The FBI recorded a teenager's murder while monitoring her father for international terrorism
In short: In 1989, sixteen-year-old Tina Isa was murdered by her parents in their St. Louis home. The crime was captured on audio by FBI agents who were secretly bugging the house to track her father’s involvement with the Abu Nidal Organization. The tapes became central evidence in a landmark murder trial.
Tina Isa, born in Brazil to a Palestinian father and a Brazilian mother, struggled to reconcile her family’s traditional expectations with her life as an American teenager. By the time she was 16, her relationship with her father, Zein Isa, had deteriorated significantly. Zein, a member of the Abu Nidal Organization, held rigid views on his daughter’s lifestyle, which included listening to American music and pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering. Her parents were particularly angered by her desire to work outside the family business and her romantic relationship with an African-American man.
On November 6, 1989, after Tina returned home from her first day of work at a fast-food restaurant, her father stabbed her six times with a boning knife. Her mother, Maria Isa, assisted by holding Tina down during the attack. Although the FBI had been conducting surveillance on the residence due to Zein’s terrorist ties, agents were not present at the unit when the murder occurred. However, the agency’s audio surveillance captured the entire incident, providing definitive proof that countered Zein’s claims of self-defense and confirmed Maria’s active participation.
The trial drew national attention, highlighting the tragic collision of cultural expectations and American assimilation. In 1991, both parents were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. Circuit Judge Charles A. Shaw famously declared that culture was no excuse for murder. While Zein died of diabetes in prison in 1997, Maria’s sentence was later commuted to life without parole; she died in 2014. The case remains a chilling example of honor-based violence, with some reports suggesting that Zein may have also feared his daughter would expose his terrorist activities to authorities.
