How Jeremy Allen White pushed his voice to the breaking point for Bruce Springsteen
In short: To embody a rock legend, Jeremy Allen White traded his usual method acting for intense vocal training. While preparing for his role as Bruce Springsteen, the actor pushed himself so hard during a recording session that he temporarily lost his voice, highlighting the physical toll of capturing a musical icon.
Jeremy Allen White, born in Brooklyn in 1991, spent his early years immersed in the arts, studying ballet, jazz, and tap before pivoting to acting at age 11. After graduating from the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, he secured his breakthrough role as Lip Gallagher in the long-running series Shameless. This decade-long commitment provided him with a foundational experience in character development, though he later admitted to feeling isolated and uncertain about his identity outside of the show.
His transition to the role of Carmen Berzatto in FX’s The Bear marked a significant shift in his career, earning him multiple Golden Globes and Emmys. To prepare for the intense, culinary-focused role, White underwent rigorous professional training, including staging at a Michelin-starred restaurant. This dedication to authenticity carried over into his 2025 portrayal of Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. Unlike his previous roles, this project required him to master both guitar and the specific vocal nuances of a rock star.
The physical demands of the Springsteen role proved particularly challenging. During recording sessions for the 1982 album Nebraska-era material, White struggled to replicate the raw power of Springsteen’s voice. He noted that while he studied live footage extensively, he lacked the years of training the singer possessed. When attempting to record 'Born in the U.S.A.', he pushed his voice to the point of failure, resulting in a temporary loss of his ability to speak. Despite this, White remains focused on the emotional truth of the performance, hoping audiences connect with the spirit of the music even if the imitation is not perfect.
