In short: John Rambo is more than a reckless lone wolf. Born from a novelist's encounter with Pennsylvania apples and the haunting legacy of a Vietnam War casualty, the character evolved from a traumatized veteran struggling with civilian life into a symbol of the complex, often painful, relationship between soldiers and their country.

The name Rambo was chosen by author David Morrell for its sound of force, inspired by Rambo apples he found in Pennsylvania. These apples trace back to Peter Gunnarsson Rambo, a Swedish settler who arrived in America in the 1640s. Morrell also saw a metaphorical connection to the poet Arthur Rimbaud, whose work A Season in Hell mirrored the prisoner-of-war experiences he imagined for his protagonist. The character’s first name, John, was a nod to the Civil War song When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.

In the 1972 novel First Blood, Rambo is a drifter suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder after being tortured in Vietnam. His violent outbursts are not merely aggressive; they are reactions to the humiliation he and other veterans faced upon returning home. While the film series later transformed him into a more traditional action hero, the core of the character remains his deep-seated trauma and his unwavering loyalty to the few people he trusts, particularly his former commanding officer, Colonel Samuel Trautman.

The character's military history is extensive: he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964, served in Special Forces, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1966. His life was defined by the loss of his unit, including his best friend Delmar Barry. These experiences, combined with the torture he endured as a POW, created a man who is an expert in guerrilla warfare but fundamentally alienated from the society he once fought to protect. Whether he is navigating the jungles of Vietnam or the mountains of Washington, Rambo remains a man living day by day, haunted by the past.
