From Bollywood Icon to Business Titan: The Multifaceted Career of Juhi Chawla
In short: Juhi Chawla redefined the Bollywood heroine, transitioning from a vivacious comic star to a critically acclaimed character actor. Beyond the screen, she has built a massive business empire, becoming India's wealthiest actress while co-owning a championship-winning cricket franchise and navigating the complexities of modern fame and public advocacy.
Born in 1967, Juhi Chawla rose to prominence after winning the 1984 Miss India pageant. Her breakthrough came with the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet that turned her into an overnight star. Throughout the 1990s, she solidified her status as a leading actress, earning acclaim for her comic timing in hits like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, for which she won a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
In the early 2000s, Chawla intentionally pivoted toward independent and art-house cinema to challenge her established image. Projects like 3 Deewarein, My Brother Nikhil, and I Am allowed her to explore complex, dramatic roles, moving away from the mainstream commercial mold. This transition was marked by a desire for realistic acting, often requiring minimal makeup and a deeper emotional range, which critics noted as a significant evolution in her professional identity.
Chawla’s influence extends far beyond acting. In 2000, she co-founded the production company Dreamz Unlimited with Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza. She is also a co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, an Indian Premier League cricket team that secured titles in 2012 and 2014. As of 2025, she is recognized as the wealthiest Indian actress, with a reported net worth of ₹7,790 crore, or US$810 million.
Her public life has not been without controversy or personal hardship. In 2021, she faced a legal setback when the Delhi High Court fined her ₹20 lakh—later reduced to ₹2 lakh—for filing a 'frivolous' lawsuit against the implementation of 5G networks. Despite such challenges and the loss of close family members, Chawla remains a prominent figure, balancing her legacy as a '90s icon with her ongoing work in streaming series and business ventures.
