Justus Esiri: The Nigerian screen icon who bridged European training and Nollywood stardom
In short: Before becoming a foundational pillar of the Nigerian film industry, Justus Esiri honed his craft in Germany. His journey from a translator in Europe to a legendary actor in classics like The Village Headmaster helped define the early era of Nollywood, leaving an indelible mark on African cinema history.
Born in Oria-Abraka in 1942, Justus Esiri’s path to fame was unconventional. After attending Urhobo College in Effurun, he moved to Germany in the 1960s. His time abroad was marked by rigorous academic and artistic training, including studies at LMU Munich, the Prof. Weners Institute of Engineering, and the Ahrens School of Performing Arts. During this period, he supported himself by working as a German translator for the Voice of Nigeria, while simultaneously launching his acting career in European productions.
Esiri’s return to Nigeria was prompted by a government invitation to join the cast of the influential television series The Village Headmaster. This role served as a springboard for a prolific career that spanned decades. He became widely recognized for his versatility, notably portraying Obierika in the film adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. His influence was so profound that the Nigerian government awarded him the Officer of the Order of the Niger, acknowledging his vital contributions to the nation's burgeoning film sector.
Even after his passing in 2013, Esiri’s legacy continued to grow. He received the Best Actor award posthumously at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards for his performance in Assassins Practice and was the first recipient of the Goodluck Jonathan Lifetime Achievement Award. His life remains a testament to the power of cross-cultural experience in shaping artistic excellence, as he successfully transitioned from a student in West Berlin to a celebrated national icon in Nigeria.
