How a Nigerian actress became a global powerhouse of cinema and social change
In short: Omotola Jalade Ekeinde transformed from a student seeking a business career into a Nollywood icon with over 300 film credits. Beyond her screen dominance, she became the first Nigerian celebrity to headline her own reality show and a powerful voice for human rights, maternal health, and environmental accountability.
Born in Lagos State in 1978, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde initially pursued studies in Estate Management at Yaba College of Technology. Her entry into entertainment was serendipitous; while awaiting university results, she began modeling to support herself and was introduced to acting after accompanying a friend to an audition. Her debut came in the 1993 film Iva, but it was her 1996 performance in Mortal Inheritance—where she portrayed a sickle-cell patient—that cemented her status, earning her the title of Nigeria’s youngest actress to win Best Actress at the 1997 Movie Awards.
Ekeinde’s career evolved alongside the Nigerian film industry. After appearing in hundreds of direct-to-video productions, she transitioned to cinematic releases with the 2010 film Ije, which became the highest-grossing Nollywood film of its time. Her influence expanded globally, leading to her inclusion in the 2013 Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people and an invitation to join the Academy Awards voting body in 2018. Her reach is not limited to acting; she launched a music career in 2005 and became the first Nigerian celebrity to surpass one million Facebook likes.
Beyond the spotlight, Ekeinde has leveraged her platform for significant humanitarian work. As a United Nations World Food Programme Ambassador, she has participated in missions across Sierra Leone and Liberia. Her advocacy extends to environmental justice, notably in 2012 when she campaigned for accountability regarding oil spills in the Niger Delta. She also champions youth empowerment through her NGO, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Program, and has actively campaigned against smoking in film to protect younger audiences. In 2019, her contributions to human development were recognized with an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Igbinedion University.
