From fashion design student to one of India's highest-paid television actors
In short: Karan Mehra transitioned from a top-performing fashion student to a household name in Indian television. Best known for his seven-year tenure as Naitik Singhania in a record-breaking serial, his career spans reality television, modeling, and film production. Yet, his public trajectory has been marked by both professional acclaim and personal turbulence.
Born in Jalandhar in 1982, Mehra initially pursued a career in design, graduating at the top of his class from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi. His path shifted toward entertainment after he moved to Mumbai, where he gained early experience as an assistant director on four films before transitioning into modeling and television commercials.
His breakthrough arrived in 2009 when he secured the lead role of Naitik Singhania in the long-running serial Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. He remained with the production for seven-and-a-half years, earning multiple accolades, including the ITA Award for Best Actor in a Drama in 2009 and 2015, and the STAR Parivaar Award for Favourite Husband. He eventually departed the show in June 2016, citing health concerns.
Beyond his primary acting work, Mehra participated in reality programs such as Nach Baliye 5 and Bigg Boss 10. His personal life, however, became a subject of intense public scrutiny following his 2012 marriage to actress Nisha Rawal. In May 2021, a domestic violence complaint was filed against him, leading to his arrest and subsequent release on bail. The couple, who share a son born in 2017, filed for divorce in August 2021 and have been separated since October 2022.
Mehra has continued to work in various formats, including a role in the 2017 series Khatmal E Ishq and a 2021 shooting stint for the Zee Punjabi soap Mawaan Thandiyan Chawan. Despite the controversies surrounding his personal life, his career remains defined by his significant contributions to Indian television drama over the past decade.
