How South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun became a global cultural powerhouse
In short: From a shy student encouraged to take acting classes to a record-breaking star, Kim Soo-hyun has dominated Asian entertainment for over a decade. Beyond his award-winning performances in hits like Queen of Tears, he has redefined celebrity influence through massive product endorsements, charitable contributions, and pioneering digital human technology.
Born in 1988 in Seoul's Gangnam District, Kim Soo-hyun began his career with a supporting role in the 2007 sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile. His breakthrough arrived with the 2011 musical drama Dream High, for which he underwent three months of intensive song and dance training. His subsequent role as King Leehwon in the 2012 period drama Moon Embracing the Sun cemented his status as a national star, with the series achieving peak viewership ratings of 42.2 percent.
Kim’s influence expanded significantly with the 2013 fantasy series My Love from the Star, which garnered over 14.5 billion hits on the Chinese platform iQIYI by early 2014. This success propelled him to become the face of 35 product endorsements, setting a new industry record. His career has been marked by versatility, ranging from the heist film The Thieves—which sold over 12.9 million tickets—to the 2020 romantic comedy It's Okay to Not Be Okay, which was recognized by The New York Times as one of the best international shows of that year.
Beyond acting, Kim has engaged in diverse professional and personal pursuits. He served in the military from 2017 to 2019, where he was promoted to Sergeant for his conduct, and has consistently contributed to charitable causes, including the Sewol ferry tragedy relief efforts. In 2021, his agency announced the development of a digital human version of the actor, designed to utilize facial expressions for applications in the metaverse and advertising. Despite recent controversies regarding his personal life and dating allegations in 2025, Kim remains a significant figure in the global entertainment landscape, having won the Most Popular Actor award at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards.
