Before the studio system, one man was the world's first true movie star.
In short: Long before Hollywood manufactured celebrity, King Baggot was the first actor to be individually promoted as a marquee star. He appeared in over 300 films, directed dozens more, and was once mobbed by fans globally. Yet, his meteoric rise eventually collapsed into bit parts and anonymity before his death.
Born in St. Louis in 1879, William King Baggot began his career in Shakespearean stock companies. In 1909, he stumbled into the fledgling film industry at the Independent Moving Pictures Company in New Jersey. At the time, the dramatic profession viewed movies as mere recordings of stunts, but Baggot’s charisma changed the landscape. Alongside Florence Lawrence, he became the first actor to receive billing and dedicated advertising, earning him monikers like the King of the Movies.
Baggot’s influence extended behind the camera. He directed 45 films between 1912 and 1928, including the western Tumbleweeds, and founded the Screen Club in New York to organize the industry's talent. By the mid-1920s, he was a powerhouse, even forming his own production company. However, his career trajectory shifted dramatically due to personal struggles with alcoholism and friction with studio executives. By the 1930s, the man once called the most photographed person in the world was reduced to taking uncredited bit parts.
His later years were marked by a quiet decline. He appeared as an extra in films like 1947's My Brother Talks to Horses before illness forced his retirement. Baggot died in 1948 at age 68, but his legacy was formally recognized in 1960 with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His life remains a stark study of the volatility of early cinematic fame, moving from the height of international adulation to the obscurity of the background extra.
