From alternative rock to the voice of Desert Island Discs: Lauren Laverne's journey
In short: Lauren Laverne rose from the Sunderland indie scene as the lead singer of Kenickie to become one of Britain's most recognizable broadcasters. Her career spans decades of television hosting, radio presenting, and cultural commentary, culminating in her role as the host of the iconic BBC radio programme Desert Island Discs.
Born Lauren Cecelia Gofton in 1978, she adopted the stage name Lauren Laverne while performing with her band, Kenickie. The group, formed with her brother and friends from Catholic school, achieved chart success in the late 1990s with their album At The Club. Following the band's dissolution in 1998, Laverne pivoted toward a career in media, leveraging her experience as a musician to transition into television and radio presenting.
Her broadcasting career is marked by a diverse range of roles, from hosting satirical news programmes like 10 O'Clock Live to presenting arts coverage on The Culture Show. In 2018, she became the permanent host of Desert Island Discs, succeeding Kirsty Young. Beyond broadcasting, Laverne has explored various creative ventures, including publishing a novel, Candypop, and co-founding the online platform The Pool, which operated until 2019. Her work often intersects with British culture, style, and music, reflecting her background in the alternative rock scene.
Laverne's personal life and public profile have remained closely tied to her roots in Sunderland, where she served as a city ambassador. Her career has been punctuated by significant health challenges, including a cancer diagnosis in 2024 from which she was given the all-clear, followed by a diagnosis of smouldering myeloma in 2026. Throughout these transitions, she has maintained a consistent presence in the UK media landscape, evolving from a teenage indie musician into a central figure in British public service broadcasting.
