From the Rolling Stones' mobile studio to the UK's menopause ambassador
In short: Before she was a mainstay of British broadcasting and a voice for gender equality, Mariella Frostrup was training as a tape operator for the Rolling Stones. Her journey from the London music industry to high-level government advocacy is a remarkable study in professional reinvention.
Born in Oslo in 1962, Mariella Frostrup’s early life was marked by significant transition. After moving from Norway to a small Irish village in 1969, she faced the loss of her father, a journalist for The Irish Times, when she was just 15. This period of upheaval preceded a move to London in 1977, where she began a career deeply embedded in the music industry.
Her professional roots are found in the technical and promotional side of rock and roll. After qualifying as a tape operator at the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—where she assisted with the Simple Minds record 'Real to Real Cacophony'—she held a PR role at Phonogram Records from 1980 to 1990. During this era, she notably coordinated publicity for the 1985 Live Aid concert at Wembley.
Frostrup eventually transitioned into a prolific media career, becoming a respected journalist, film critic, and presenter. Her versatility is evident in her work: she has been an 'agony aunt' for The Observer, a travel writer for The Daily Telegraph, and a presenter for BBC Radio 4 and Sky Arts. Beyond the screen, she has served on judging panels for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize for Fiction.
In recent years, her focus has shifted toward advocacy. Alongside figures like Davina McCall, she co-founded Menopause Mandate in 2022 to raise awareness of menopause. Her impact extended to top-tier policy in October 2024, following her appointment as the Menopause Employment Ambassador for the UK Government, a role focused on assisting firms to aid women at work.
