From ballet student to the ruthless Queen of Westeros
In short: Lena Headey did not achieve instant fame. Her journey began as a young ballet student before she spent twenty years navigating British television and independent cinema. This long, steady climb eventually led her to become one of the most formidable and recognizable faces in modern fantasy history.
Born in 1973 to a police officer stationed in Bermuda, Headey’s path to acting began with ballet lessons as a child. At the age of 17, she gained attention during a school play staged at the Royal National Theatre. This led to her debut in the 1992 mystery drama Waterland, where she worked alongside more experienced actors—a pivotal step that launched a career of steady growth across British and American media. Her father served in the Bermuda Police Service during her early years. After moving to England at age five, she settled first in Somerset.
Headey spent years cultivating a diverse portfolio before reaching global recognition. She appeared in high-profile projects like Disney's The Jungle Book (1994) and the critically acclaimed Remains of the Day (1993). By the mid-2000s, she began securing lead roles in films such as The Brothers Grimm (2005), where she explored a 'tomboyish' character with animalistic instincts, and 300 (2006), which required her to navigate complex nudity for the sake of establishing historical relationships. She also appeared in Mrs Dalloway alongside Vanessa Redgrave. In a 1998 miniseries, she portrayed Queen Guinevere opposite Sam Neill.
Her career reached a pinnacle in 2011 when she was cast as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones. Interestingly, the role was suggested by her friend Peter Dinklage. Her portrayal of the ruthless queen garnered five Emmy Award nominations between 2014 and 2019. Beyond live-action, Headey has also expanded into voice acting for video games like Risen and animated series such as Danger Mouse, showcasing a versatile range that spans from gritty sci-fi to high fantasy. The role of Cersei was based on George R.R. Martin's novels. She also voiced characters in the puppet series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
