In short: Emilia Jones has navigated a remarkable transition from the London stage to international film acclaim. After years of training in improvisation and theatre, she captured global attention through a performance that required mastering an entirely new language and a complex maritime skill.

Born in London on 23 February 2002, Emilia Jones began her professional journey as a child actress. In 2011, her West End beginnings included portraying Young Fiona during the premiere of Shrek the Musical at Drury Lane's Theatre Royal. By 2013, she was performing in stage adaptations of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, playing the character Flora. Her early training also included attending an improvisation class led by an agent. She previously studied at Kew House School in West London before committing to acting as a full-time profession.

Her transition to screen involved a variety of roles, from minor appearances in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in 2011 to television work in series such as Doctor Who and the Netflix adventure Locke & Key, which ran from 2020 to 2022. It was during the production of Locke & Key that she prepared for her breakthrough role as Ruby Rossi in the 2021 film CODA. To portray the only hearing member of a deaf family, Jones spent nine months learning American Sign Language, while also training to operate a professional fishing trawler. She was drawn to her role in Locke & Key by the opportunity to portray a character in two different states: before and after her fear was removed. Her filmography also includes early roles in the western Brimstone and the psychological drama Two for Joy.

The impact of CODA was significant; the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Apple Original Films for $25 million. It later became the first film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards after premiering at Sundance. This role earned Jones a BAFTA Film Award nomination and a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination. Her recent and upcoming work includes the psychological thriller Cat Person, the crime series Task, and the biographical drama Tony. The actress is the daughter of English circus performer Claire Fossett and Welsh presenter Aled Jones. Looking ahead, she is set to appear in the sports drama The 99'ers and Edgar Wright's adaptation of The Running Man.
