From a sports-obsessed teen to a global screen star in five short years
In short: Leo Woodall initially planned a career in athletics, but a single television series changed his trajectory at age 19. Since graduating from drama school in 2019, he has rapidly ascended from minor guest spots to leading roles in major international streaming hits and high-profile feature films.
Born in Hammersmith and raised in Shepherd's Bush, London, Leo Vincent Woodall grew up surrounded by the performing arts. His parents, who met at drama school, were part of a lineage of actors that included his grandmother and stepfather. Despite this background, Woodall originally set his sights on sports. His pivot to acting was sparked by watching the series Peaky Blinders, a decision that led him to complete a degree in acting at the Arts Educational School in 2019.
Woodall’s early professional steps included a 2019 appearance on the medical drama Holby City and a role in the short film Man Down. His tenacity was evident early on; he secured a spot in the feature film Nomad after competing against 28,000 other hopefuls. His breakthrough arrived with the second season of HBO’s The White Lotus, where he played Jack, a character from Essex. To master the specific regional dialect, he studied the mannerisms of television personality Joey Essex. This performance earned him recognition as a 2023 Screen International Star of Tomorrow.
The actor’s career accelerated significantly in 2024 with his lead performance as Dexter Mayhew in the Netflix adaptation of One Day. Critics praised his portrayal, with IndieWire’s Proma Khosla describing his work as exceptionally charismatic. By 2025, Woodall had firmly established himself as a versatile lead, starring as a mathematician in the Apple TV+ thriller Prime Target, appearing alongside Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and portraying Sgt. Howie Triest in the film Nuremberg. His rapid rise from a 2019 graduate to a global lead actor marks a notable trajectory in contemporary television and cinema.
