From Crime Alley to the Oblivion Bar: Mapping the DC Universe
In short: The DC Universe is more than a collection of heroes; it is a sprawling geography of specific landmarks. From high-security metahuman prisons to extradimensional bars for magic users, these locations provide the physical stakes for every battle and the cultural backdrop for every myth.
The geography of the DC Universe balances grounded urban reality with fantastical realms. In the gritty streets of Gotham City, locations like Crime Alley (formerly known as Park Row) serve as historical anchors for tragedy, while the Burnside borough provides a specific home for the New 52 version of Batgirl. Conversely, Metropolis offers a study in social contrast: the corporate height of LexCorp Towers stands in opposition to Suicide Slum (Southside), the impoverished neighborhood where Lex Luthor was raised before building his fortune. The universe also features specialized hubs for the supernatural and the clandestine. The Oblivion Bar serves as an extradimensional hangout for magic users and the headquarters for the Shadowpact, while the Sanctum of Doctor Fate is tucked away in Salem, Massachusetts.
For the heroes, headquarters are often mobile or repurposed; the Justice Society Headquarters was built on the foundations of a former brownstone museum, and the Reichuss Mansion exists as a mobile haunted house. Finally, the setting extends into the realm of pop culture and real-world interaction. Big Belly Burger, a fast-food chain inspired by Bob's Big Boy, has transitioned from a fictional Coast City startup to a staple of the Arrowverse, the cinematic DCU, and even a physical food establishment at Six Flags. These landmarks ensure that whether a story is set in a sewer-based Underworld or a high-security prison like Belle Reve in St. Roch, Louisiana, the setting feels lived-in and permanent.
